Week 5- September 8th-12th
Monday September 8th
We started off our week by talking about the letter Dd and identified words that start with Dd. We then read the Scholastic's My Big World magazine about apples, where students heard a description of a fruit and had to decide if it was an apple or not.
After recess and lunch, we talked all about squares and how they have 4 points and 4 equal sides. During center time, some students worked in a small group to work on their letter writing assessments.
Tuesday September 9th
Today we celebrated Karley's birthday with our famous Birthday Boogie!
We also continued to talk about the letter Dd and made a huge list of words. Students then expanded on what we learned in our magazine on Monday and completed an apple themed worksheet.
One of our goals by the end of the school year is to eliminate nap time completely from our schedule. In order to do this, we start by eliminating nap on early dismissal days and instead watch a movie. For our first early out movie, we watched "Coco" to prepare for Hispanic Heritage Month which starts on the 15th.
While we were watching the movie, students also made the cutest handprint apple crafts.
Wednesday September 10th
Today we practiced how to write the letter Dd. Students were taught that an uppercase D is a straight line down and one big bump while a lowercase d is a small ball and a big bat. We also looked at examples of what can happen if we do not write letters correctly and how D can look like P or d can look like b.
We also worked on some fine motor skills by using cotton balls to make an apple tree painting. Students first looked at a good example and a bad example and noticed what things they should and should not do. Then students got to work to make some of the best apple tree paintings (which are displayed on the class "fridge").
We continued to talk about squares today and watched an episode of "Numberblocks" to show different sizes of squares. Some students participated in centers while others worked on their letter writing!
Thursday September 11th
We started the day by celebrating both Miss Paige's and Ethan's birthdays with the Birthday Boogie!
On Thursday, we also got to do our first ever experiment. We discussed how sometimes the students will get to do the work and sometimes one of the teachers will do the work and how we can be safe during experiments. Students got to see an "erupting apple" by pouring vinegar into and apple with baking soda. Students were amazed by the fizzy chemical reaction that was caused! We then discussed how the materials used are things that we see in foods but how we wouldn't want to eat them after we use them. We also talked about how this is an experiment that you could do at home but only if you had an adult helping you.
Students ended the day by playing in centers and did activities like fighting crime as a super hero, creating art, or building planes to fly around.
Friday September 12th
Today for P.E. we played "clean your room". This is a preschool friendly version of dodgeball. The object of the game is to end up with less balls on your side of the room, thus making your room cleaner. This game teaches students about boundaries, more or less, counting up to 30, and throwing. We also had to take a bit of time to discuss good sportsmanship, as some of our friends were teasing and mocking other friends when we won a round.
We finished off our day with some popsicles to celebrate Pope Leo's 70th birthday. Thank you Jesus team!
Next week's topics
Next week, we will be talking all about Farms and farm animals as our theme. We will also be talking about the letter Ee and rectangles.
